Party Season Etiquette: Celebrating the Year without Crossing the Line

Employer Candidate Advice

As the year winds down, workplaces across Aotearoa gear up for the much-anticipated Christmas work function. It’s a memorable annual event, a chance to celebrate collective wins, acknowledge everyone’s hard mahi, and enjoy some well-deserved fun with colleagues. These events offer a rare opportunity to connect on a more relaxed level, share a laugh, and reflect on the year’s successes. For many teams, it’s the one time of year when people can truly let their hair down.

However, while the vibe may be more festive than a Monday morning team meeting, the expectations around behaviour remains the same, and Christmas parties, as fun as they are, do come with risks. A work function is still considered a workplace environment under New Zealand employment law, which means the standards that apply in the office also apply at the venue, the restaurant, or wherever your celebration is held. This includes professional conduct, respect for colleagues, and zero tolerance for harassment, discrimination, bullying, or intimidating behaviour.

Employers have a duty of care to provide a safe environment at all work-related events, and employees also play a crucial role in contributing to that safety. A few beverages may lighten the mood, but they don’t lighten your responsibilities.

For employees – Your actions at a work do can have a lasting impact beyond the night itself; on team culture, relationships with colleagues, and even your professional reputation. Keeping things respectful ensures everyone feels comfortable and able to enjoy the celebration.

For employers – Setting expectations before your upcoming celebration goes a long way in keeping everyone on the same page and on their best behaviour. Businesses have previously faced costly harassment claims with the Employment Relations Authority stemming from Christmas work functions. Reinforcing clear guidelines around alcohol, transport, and acceptable conduct isn’t about dampening the fun, it helps ensure the night stays safe, enjoyable, and incident-free for everyone.

As you head into the festive season, enjoy the moment. Celebrate the milestones, have a good laugh, connect with your team, and savour the chance to unwind. Just remember to carry the same professionalism you show during work hours into the Christmas party, and you’ll help make it a positive, memorable event for everyone.
