Bay of Plenty is a popular choice for Work-Life Balance

There has been a strong focus on marketing the Bay of Plenty region and all that is on offer as a place to do business, work, live and play, and we are now being able to gauge measurable results, through investment into the region and the number of people relocating and enquiry received. Of course for those of us that live here, it’s no surprise. A well-kept secret, word is now out that you can enjoy a meaningful career, enjoy a market rate salary and have that essential balance we all seem to strive for. All within a 2.5hr drive from Auckland.

The benefits of a lifestyle in the Bay are becoming an increasingly valuable proposition as the cost of city living and property becomes unaffordable for many ordinary New Zealanders. Work-life balance is more important and is factoring highly for many families who are choosing the lifestyle here over higher paying roles in bigger cities and other countries.

Technology now available means that the physical location of a business is less important. Business is mobile and can often be conducted from any location with an internet connection and our central north island location is often seen as advantageous for businesses who wish to operate outside of the larger cities.

Increased Employment Opportunity
With new industrial developments in the Bay, a range of businesses have relocated providing a range of opportunities across all employment categories. This has given the region a real boost, in terms of both population and job numbers.

It has been reported that at least 11 businesses have already moved to the Tauranga area, with 492 new roles created in the 2013-14 year as a result. The largest employer so far to move into Tauranga is Brother with a staff of around 40 moving 35 Wellington families into the region. Jenkins Freshpac are another, with 11 families having moved from Auckland. Plans to develop a new tertiary campus in Tauranga will add value to the economy and employ approximately 600 people through the development phase. Not to be over-looked, Rotorua has also been cited as one of the country’s “Hottest Boom Spots” in the latest edition of the NZ Property Investor magazine, with some major projects expected to commence this year – including a state of the art dementia village in Ngongotaha and $6m Child Health Centre, adding significant value and employment opportunities to the region.

From a recruitment point of view there has been a significant increase in activity from the same time in 2013 indicating strong growth in the employment sector regionally the region. Recent statistics show that both job listings and average pay levels have increased in the Rotorua area over the past 12 months.

Sectors which indicate strong employment growth in Rotorua include Trade and Services, Hospitality and Tourism, with heathcare and retail also making gains. Across the region areas of growth include horticulture and food processing, ICT, marine discovery (pharmaceuticals, agrichemicals and aquaculture), specialised manufacturing, education, health, energy and distribution and logistics.

With Auckland becoming an unaffordable option for many home buyers, we have seen a dramatic increase in young professionals locating to the region. The option of living in a more desirable location, less commuting times and increased lifestyle balance make working here an attractive option. With a continuing trend of businesses relocating and an increase in employment opportunities, the Bay of Plenty is a well- positioned value proposition.

Some history, the Māori name for this region is the Ocean of Toi-te-Huatahi. Captain Cook then named the region the Bay of Plenty. Wednesday, September 22, 2021

I did not understood work life balance until I helped my family with finances. Choosing your work environment is a great opportunity since not everyone is able to. Friday, February 18, 2022
